White Sapphire vs. Cubic Zirconia

We are very excited to announce our recent launch of white sapphire jewelry!  So you might ask, “White Sapphire Vs. Cubic Zirconia.  What’s the difference?”

This new product selection has lead to many questions about the pros and cons of white sapphire versus cubic zirconia.  White sapphire is a very durable and gorgeous stone.

Here are some basic points about White Sapphire vs. Cubic Zirconia:

1.  Hardness:  Cubic zirconia is between 8 and 8.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Eight is very hard. However, it still scratches. Cubic Zirconia wears down more easily than white sapphire.
2.  Coloring:  Cubic zirconia can lose its color over time, making it appear dull.  White Sapphire will not lose its color. It stays white and brilliant.
3.  Brilliance:  Cubic Zirconia has a higher number on the refractive index, meaning it refracts light faster and so appears more brilliant. Faster refraction is why cubic zirconia looks more like a diamond than white sapphire does.  Cubic zirconia measures at 2.15- 2.18 versus white sapphire at approximately 1.76 – 1.77.  A diamond’s measures a 2.42.  White sapphire has the highest refractive index of natural gemstones.
What is cubic zirconia?  What is a white sapphire?  White sapphire is a naturally occurring gemstone.  It is mined, polished, and finished like any other gemstone found naturally such as peridot, amethyst and a myriad of other stones.  Cubic zirconia is a lab created gem.  Being a lab created item does not mean that the quality is better or worse.  It merely indicates that the origin of the stone is not natural.
Another point to consider is the budget.  While comparing a lot of stone options, you will notice a vast difference in prices.  While you might want to buy the highest quality diamond, it might not be realistic.  Selecting between diamond, white sapphire, and cubic zirconia gives you options for pricing from $10 up into the thousands.

In conclusion, white sapphire, diamond, and cubic zirconia are three great options, each with different pluses and minuses.
