Wedding rings and other fine jewelry are designed to be worn on an everyday basis, but all of these materials can fall victim to dirt and residue. Dirt build-up can be harmful to your stone settings.

With over 25 years of experience in this family-owned business, we’ve learned a thing or two about proper jewelry care. Read on for a guide that the TwoBirch team encourages for proper cleaning habits!

Taking Care of Your Fine Jewelry:  Picking the Proper Cleaner

First of all, never clean with harsh chemicals, or guess on a cleaning solution. This can lead to corrosion and damage your beautiful jewelry! Instead, soak your piece in warm water. Then, grab an old toothbrush and lightly scrub it with mild dish soap and let it dry. This works best for gold, sterling silver, or costume jewelry pieces.

Before you try a take-home cleaning solution, know what kind of metal you are wearing. If it’s gold, silver or platinum, they will be treated differently because they can react to different products.

There are several cheap sterling silver cleaners on the market that work wonders, especially with combined with a jewelry cleaning cloth.

Cloths are great for simple, quick touches on all your pieces. Try a chamois or microfiber cloth to wipe jewelry clean, and a polishing cloth to shine up metal.

Know When To Take it to a Professional

We can’t stress it enough, know what metal/stone you are wearing! If you are entirely unsure, we recommend taking your piece to a professional jeweler. However, if you have a TwoBirch piece, our support team would be happy to help you figure out what you are wearing!

Platinum can sustain scratches more easily than some other metals, so professional attention is best. Stones such as diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are safe in the warm water solution. However, others such as opals, gemstones, pearls, and turquoise should probably be taken to a professional. Certain cleaners can damage these stones!

Professional cleaning can vary in price and take a couple of minutes to a couple of days. Try taking your piece to the jeweler you got it from! Some jewelers will clean their pieces free of charge.

The TwoBirch team recommends a professional cleaning once a year for optimum shine and care for your jewelry, especially rings!

Don’t Wear it Every day? Store it Right!

Proper storage can lead to clean jewelry that lasts. It’s so easy to toss all your pieces in a box, but hard stones can damage your softer materials. Instead, opt for a traditional jewelry box that is fabric lined, so nothing gets damaged. Clean, dry, and out of sunlight is best!
