June Birthstone Moonstone

June has three birthstones: Pearl, Alexandrite, and Moonstone. Roman natural historian Pliny once wrote “that moonstone’s shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon,” according to the American Gem Society. It’s no surprise that the gem carries the same ethereal energy as the moon herself.

Moonstones come from the mineral adularia, as they used to be heavily mined in Switzerland’s Mt. Adular. The discovery of the gem also led to the coining of the word “adularescence,” which references the unique glow of the gem’s shimmery transparency that felt like moonlight trapped inside the glass. Moonstones shine like this because they are microscopic layers of feldspar, which scatter light in a way that makes it seem almost luminescent.

Moonstones have a relatively low score on the Mohs scale, meaning that it’s a softer gem that is likely to crack and cleave if not cared for properly. Classical moonstones have a blue sheen, but they can also come in yellow, gray, green, peach, and pink.

History of the Moonstone

Appreciation of the moonstone goes back to the Romans, who believed that it could form moonbeams. After all, the gem is named by the Roman historian Pliny.

Moonstone has a long history of religious and spiritual connotations. The Greeks and Romans had many deities associated with the moon, who was then in turn associated with the precious gem. Hindu mythology claimed the stone to made of moonlight and regarded it as a magical “dream stone” that would bring positive and serene dreams.

More recently, Florida adopted the stone as its official state gemstone in 1970. Moonstone does not naturally occur in Florida. It was named the state’s gem to honor the Apollo 11 moon landing and the overall space program that was successfully operating out of Florida at the time.

Today, most classical moonstones come from Sri Lanka, though they have become increasingly inexpensive because of heavy mining in the area that has made the gems more scarce. Brown, green, or orange moonstones are found more abundantly in India, Australia, Myanmar, Madagascar, and the United States, and they tend to be more affordable. As a semi-precious stone, it isn’t too hard to find affordable jewelry that utilizes it.

Significance of the Moonstone

The moonstone is most commonly associated with femininity, which is no surprise considering it harnesses so much lunar energy. It is thought to bring a sense of calm, balanced stability. Its aura is one of tranquilities and renewal that banishes negative energies regarding past pains and resentments.

It is also known as a healing stone, particularly for those who harness feminine energy themselves. Many people wear the moonstone to gain insight into the power of their femininity. This helps them heal towards a more confident version of themselves and find peace in their feminine energy.

Many people hone the energy of moonstone in different ways.   Depending on what part of their life needs healing, clarity, and peace determines use. Placing a loose stone in your home can help you feel more balanced.  It will also inspire you not to try to control things outside of yourself. Wearing a moonstone necklace can help you feel more at peace in solitude or heal from a sorely broken heart. A moonstone ring will allow you to feel relaxed, calm, and collected as you pursue your passions and ambitions. Since bracelets touch the body’s energy meridian.  It keeps your inner balance in check, a moonstone bracelet can help you remain tranquil in times of adversity.
