How to avoid Tarnish on Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver is a gorgeous and durable metal that can be worn for a lifetime if cared for properly. The main issue people encounter with sterling silver tarnishes (discoloration) over time. A chemical reaction of the metals with other elements such as air cause tarnish. Other things that cause tarnish are moisture and even the oils on your skin. While tarnish may seem inevitable, it is avoidable. Here are some tips on avoiding tarnish.

Avoid exposure to the elements

One of the easiest ways to prevent tarnish is to remove your jewelry when coming into contact with water, including hand-washing, showering, and swimming. Also be sure to remove your jewelry when washing dishes or anything else around your house. Chemicals such as bleach or chlorine can corrode your silver and especially damage any gemstones. Even chemicals found in lotions and perfumes can cause damage to your favorite jewelry. When getting ready in the morning, putting on your jewelry should be one of the last things you do (after spritzing and moisturizing). In the dry winter months, avoid slathering your rings with hand cream. Overall, sterling silver and liquids don’t mix.

How to remove tarnish

The easiest way to remove tarnish is to use a simple polishing cloth. If you still feel a need for a deeper clean, you may use a silver cleaner, but we recommend using them only as a last resort.  Silver cleaners contain harsh chemicals which can strip and damage gemstones (and even your hands). Silver cleaners come in the form of a dip or a paste (and we recommend wearing gloves with either).

If you are using a silver polishing dip, put some of the product into a small bowl and gently dip your jewelry into the solution. Do Not Let It Soak! Extended exposure can severely damage your jewelry.

If you are using a silver polishing paste, take a soft (tooth)brush and rub the material in a straight line. Circular motion will cause scratches.

For either dip or paste, remove the polish solution with a cloth.  Rinse under cold running water.  If you do not thoroughly remove the substance, it will dry white.  Lastly, buff your jewelry with a soft cloth to give it shine.

Storage

After cleaning your jewelry, make sure it is completely dry using a polishing cloth. You should always store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. We recommend wiping down your jewelry after use to avoid any buildup of natural oils, sweat, dirt, and lotions.  You can purchase jewelry boxes lined with tarnish-free cloth, or you can buy anti-tarnish paper strips. You can also store them in sealed baggies, which prevents scratching and exposure to air that can speed up tarnish.  Proper storage will keep your jewelry pieces in beautiful condition.
