Conflict-Free Diamonds -What Does it Mean & How to Buy Ethical Diamond Rings

At TwoBirch, we are so fortunate to have been in the fine jewelry and diamond industry for decades. We love it so much! Unfortunately, there are still damaging environmental impacts, unethical labor practices and violence associated with diamond mining around the world happening to this day.  At TwoBirch, our mission is to create beautiful handcrafted jewelry while maintaining a moral business culture by using only conflict-free diamonds.

What are Conflict-Free Diamonds? Where is This Happening?

For many countries, beautiful sparkling diamonds are a cause for civil war outbreaks and bloodshed. This is where the terms “blood” or “conflict” diamonds have come from. In just the past two decades alone, there have been brutal war outbreaks in Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, the Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone. Groups fight to control diamond-rich areas and the tension fuels military and rebel groups.

Over the years, these battles have led to millions of dead or displaced. Also, many of the world’s diamonds are collected under horrible labor conditions, such as exploitation, underpay, and unsafe working conditions.

Poor mining practices have also led to deforestation, soil erosion, and severe damage to many ecosystems. Read more about this issue here.

How To Be Sure You Buy Conflict-Free Diamonds

At TwoBirch, we adhere to the Kimberley Process (KPCS) which helps prevent “blood diamonds” from entering the diamond market. KPCS was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly as a landmark resolution supporting the fight against conflict diamonds. It is a set of requirements for controlling rough diamond production and trade. We ensure that all our materials adhere to the KPCS specifications and are from conflict-free sources only.

As an added alternative, we also offer several options to diamonds such as moissanite, lab-grown diamonds and cubic zirconia, as well as other precious gemstones like sapphire and ruby.
